What actually matters
Purpose before preference.
The name 'Anatolian Shepherd' is still common in North America, but the FCI currently recognizes the Kangal Shepherd Dog under the Turkish standard. That naming distinction is worth understanding when comparing pedigrees and breed information.
Both dogs are independent livestock guardians. The practical comparison is often between the Caucasian Shepherd's heavier mountain-guardian type and the Kangal tradition's more athletic, mobile livestock-guardian build.
A larger body is not automatically better protection. Terrain, fencing, predator pressure, livestock, climate and how much ground a dog must cover should matter more than choosing the most imposing silhouette.

Flock protection, home deterrence, active handling, family companionship and open-range work reward different traits.
How much independence do you want?
Some owners want precise handler responsiveness. Others intentionally choose a guardian bred to assess situations with less direction.
